With Hurricane Season in full swing we wanted to look into the usefulness of spray foam insulation as a potential deterrent to the type of damaging winds and flooding that are so typical of these storms. Every year the cost of damages to coastal homes seems to be rising as the hurricanes and tropical storms continue to get worse. From homes and other structures having their foundations ripped out from underneath them due to storm surges and coastal flooding, to roofs being blown off during +111 mile winds (the type typical of a category 3 hurricane). According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), flooding from these types of storms has amassed more than $3.5 Billion in insurance claims annually. With these types of numbers, it’s not uncommon to question whether there was something more you can do to protect your homes, your business, and your family.

Enter Spray Foam Insulation.

Spray Foam Insulation has long been valued by the marketplace as an extremely effective barrier, helping to restrict water and air from entering a structure. FEMA’s Recommendations On Flood Resistant Building Materials

FEMA has also identified a number of other flood-resistant building materials that are ideal for construction or repair of a home located in or impacted by hurricanes, tropical storms, and other types of flooding. The building materials FEMA has identified have been rated either a Class 4 or Class 5 in FEMA’s flood damage-resistance classification system and include corrosion-resistant coated steel, pressure-treated wood, epoxy formed-in-place flooring, and Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (Closed Cell). To meet these requirements the materials must be able to stand up to floodwater for an extended period of time (about 72 hours).

Benefits of Using Closed Cell Insulating Foam

FEMA has highlighted Closed Cell Insulation as a Class 5 insulation due to several factors that help it stand out from other types of spray foam and batting-type insulation. Unlike the spongy/flexible texture of Open Cell Spray Foam, closed-cell insulation becomes rigid after application, cementing its place as a key element in the overall structural integrity of buildings in flood and hurricane-prone areas. When applied to certain key areas such as unvented attics, closed-cell foam can also prevent roofs from being blown off from high-speed, damaging winds.
